We've Got The Juice

One reason General Motors has been finding success in electric vehicles is the major investment we’ve made in domestic battery cell production. Our Ultium Cell joint venture with LG Energy Solution cranks out pouch cells in plants in both Warren, Ohio and Spring Hill, Tennessee – and we recently announced an agreement to expand our relationship with LG to develop prismatic cells for future EVs.

The cells produced in Warren and Spring Hill go into vehicles like the all-electric Cadillac Lyriq luxury SUV and the GMC Hummer EV, giving customers greater choice and access to EV technology. GM has a broader portfolio of EVs than any other company in the industry.

This month, the Ultium Cells plant in Warren reached a remarkable milestone, building its 100 millionth battery cell.

“Our joint venture blends the best technology and manufacturing processes with a talented and dedicated workforce,” Kurt Kelty, vice president of battery cell and pack, and JP Clausen, executive vice president of global manufacturing and sustainability, wrote in a GM News story about the achievement. “In fact, Ultium Cells has established itself as one of the largest manufacturers of battery cells in North America – showcasing how American innovation and manufacturing powers the future of mobility.”
